Southorn: It is frustrating to lose games, we need to start winning them

15.10.2022

The fans have once again voted for the best player of the week, and the winner of this week's voting is Jordon Southorn. He has previously worn the jerseys of HC Banská Bystrica and HK Dukla Ingema Michalovce and after a year-long break he has returned to the highest Slovak hockey league’s ice rinks wearing the “Steelers” jersey. He has accumulated one goal and three assists in the third week of the season and helped HC Košice to win their first win of the season against Trenčín, a team that managed to get their first points just two days earlier against Poprad.

The start of the season was extremely difficult and frustrating for the team from Košice. After a very close result in Michalovce (lost 3:2), then in Nitra (same result as in Michalovce), lost a game at home against Prešov (1:2), and after yet another loss against Zvolen (5:2) the team finally managed to push through and get their long-awaited 3-point victory against Trenčín. “Yea it’s always nice to contribute offense and help the team win when you can, the game against Trencin was one of those nights that clicked for me, and I was very happy that we were able to get our first win of the season. I think we all realized how important it was to break the losing streak, we didn’t feel we deserved to be 0-4 to start the year, we played good hockey games but couldn’t find a win to win. The league is very good, and many games are decided by 1 goal, so we knew we had to work on scoring all week and we did that. It paid off with us scoring 5 goals that night.” said Southorn, who is a well-known for his productivity as a defenseman in Tipos Extraleague where he has managed to accumulate 122 points in 144 games that he has played here.

“I think if we continue to work hard and do the right things as we are doing, the wins will come More often, we play the games hard and we are a good team with a lot of great players. We just have to focus on 1 game at a time and do everything possible to get 3 points.” Just shortly before the season started, Košice have announced that they will be playing in the Crow arena instead of their official one. “Yea it is definitely different than playing in Steel arena, it's very unfortunate that we cannot play in front of all the fans and in our original arena. I am not sure about the plans on moving back, of course we would all like to return to Steel arena and play but for right now we have to focus on crow arena and winning hockey games there.” The highly skilled Canadian defenseman, who has also played in AHL before, could be the difference-maker for the “Steelers”, and help them achieve their goals this season. “Our goal is simple; we need to start winning hockey games. it's frustrating to lose games especially consecutive games in a row, and it's hard to win hockey games but we must find a way to do that consistently and move up in the standings.”

On behalf of Projekt Timeout, we would like to thank Jordon Southorn for taking his time to do this interview with us. May all your practice and preparation meet with the best of luck.
